James Nielson in a nutshell
The selections of portfolio presented here covers most of the tools I use and the things I DO with them. Premiere, Final Cut Pro and sometimes Avid for editing. After Effects, Red Giant, Cinema 4D & Mocha for animation, compositing, effects, 3D and magic. Photoshop, Illustrator & all that Adobe jazz for 2D stuff. Lights, camera... whatever I can get my hands on, whether a script or a camera. Learning is the key to a fulfilling life.
I've done a lot of jobs in my life (zookeeper, hazmat technician, foodcart owner...) but finally landed in the world video and I've been working in and studying the world of visual communication for two decades now. Why? I love deoderant and had to be involved with making ads like the award-winning Old Spice "Is it right for me?" campaign. Actually... I love working with people who know their craft and care about quality. I love turning ideas into images and refining them until they are about as good as they can be. Stories are important (and fun).
Beyond my career in video, I'm also a writer, an outdoorsman, and a father. I've lived in Portland for most of my adult life, but have roots in Idaho and consider myself a citizen of both worlds. That's about all I care to say about myself for now. If you'd like to contact me, there's a button below, my contact page, or LinkedIn.
